Lycka's folk influences are obvious, and the looping rhythms in unfamiliar Swedish at times add to the anticipation of the unknown. The title track, translated as "Happiness," sounds like an early Elton John piano ballad, and was the first single along with the folksy "Hej, gamle man!", the latter of which topped radio play in the duo's hometown. It's easy to see why: Agnetha Fltskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad's voices are soaring. This was the first time the two couples had recorded together (Bjrn Andersson and Agnetha Fltskog were already engaged at this point). Listening to it now, it's like discovering a forgotten ABBA song in the back of a closet. Amazingly, all the ingredients for ABBA were there, opening the B-side of Lycka.

This pop sensibility shaped the direction of the two songwriters. In places, the influence of bands like The Turtles is apparent, and the rambling "Ge oss en chans" sounds like the hits of Procol Harum or early Status Quo, sweetening hard-hitting psychedelia for mainstream palate. But "Kalles visa" is the most interesting song here, imagine Benny Andersson and Bjrn Ulvaeus joining glam rockers Sweet.

Heavier cuts like the album's closer, "Livet gr sin gng," are outnumbered by lighter cuts like "Liselott" (written by Agnetha Fltskog), which mirrors the Schlager style that dominated continental pop for decades. Although several artists have recorded covers of Lycka, few have been successful with the selection, but Anni-Frid Lyngstad later returned to the title track on her debut LP, Frida, produced by Benny Andersson and released in 1971.

No one is pretending that this is an ABBA album, but the beloved ABBA formula is clearly present here. At the heart of Lycka is Benny and Bjorn's exceptional songwriting skills, weaving rich and diverse music across 11 tracks that are instantly intoxicating and will make you want to listen to them over and over again.

In 1972, a few years before ABBA's late 70s, Bjorn and Benny had a big hit in Japan with "Kogarashi no Shojo." The song was often played on late-night radio, and its airing on Say! Young and Pack In Music at the time led to its success, perhaps because DJs liked the intro and harmonies that appealed to Japanese people. In Japan, where S&G were popular, male duos tended to have hits at the time, and "Siemon's Tears/England Dan & John Ford Corley" and "Autumn is Alone/Viglas & Osborne" were also hits only in Japan in the 70s. This is the first album released in 1970 by the two who would later form ABBA. For ABBA fans, the voices of Agnetha and Ann-Frid can already be heard as backing vocals on the first and ninth tracks, making this an album that is truly the "eve". Agnetha's name is also listed among the composers on the ninth track. "She's My Kind of Girl" was not included on this album, but was included as an ABBA song on ABBA's debut album [Ring Ring].
